suivre at C2 — literary & formal

On this page
    « suivre » — jump to your level:A1A2B1B2C1C2Native

    Lists, lawsuits and long-term monitoring.

    The written register

« Comme suit » announces a list in reports and minutes: « les conclusions se résument comme suit ». Its companion « les points suivants » does the same work a sentence earlier. Both are impersonal, and neither has a spoken equivalent, because out loud you would simply say « voilà ce qu’on propose » and start talking through the items.

« Poursuivre » is the derived cousin doing double duty: to prosecute, as in « poursuivi pour publicité mensongère », and to carry on with, as in « poursuivre ses études ». The noun « le suivi » completes the family, and « assurer le suivi » is the administrative promise that somebody will actually monitor what happens after the decision.

💡 Focus at this level: Formal — comme suit, poursuivre, assurer le suivi
