📘 How to use Haïr

  • The diaeresis trap: it DISAPPEARS in je / tu / il present (je hais, one syllable [ɛ]) but appears everywhere else (nous haïssons, two syllables [a.i]).
  • H aspiré: no elision — say je hais (not « j’hais »), le haïr. Don’t link it.
  • Haïr is strong (to hate / loathe); détester is the everyday « to hate ». « Je te hais » is dramatic!
