Two past tenses, one movie: the scenery is imparfait, the action is passé composé.
Imagine your story as a film. Everything the camera pans over — weather, feelings, background — is imparfait: « il pleuvait, j’étais fatigué ». Everything that happens — events, actions, changes — is passé composé: « le téléphone a sonné ».
« tous les jours, souvent, pendant que » → imparfait. « hier, soudain, une fois, à 8 h » → passé composé.
