In literature the passé simple replaces the passé composé — learn to read it instantly.
The literary event tense
In novels and history, events wear the passé simple: « il entra, elle se leva, ils parlèrent ». The imparfait keeps exactly its role — background — so the movie trick still works; only the action tense has changed costume.
Recognition kit
-a / -it / -ut endings: « il alla », « il finit », « il fut », « il eut », « il vint ». Swap them mentally for passé composé and read on.
