Add the plus-que-parfait and layer a real story: before, during, and the events.
Three layers of past
Plus-que-parfait = the past before the past: « il avait déjà mangé quand je suis arrivé ». Your narration now has depth: PQP (before) → imparfait (background) → passé composé (events).
Imparfait + venir de
« Je venais de partir quand… » — had just. Refined and very frequent in storytelling.
