« Je dormais quand tu as appelé » — the two tenses in one sentence.
The classic B1 sentence: imparfait sets the ongoing action, passé composé interrupts it: « Je dormais quand tu as appelé ». « Pendant que » introduces the background; « quand » often introduces the event.
Some verbs change meaning: « je savais » (I knew all along) vs « j’ai su » (I found out); « je voulais » (I wanted) vs « j’ai voulu » (I tried/decided to).
