devenir at A2 — the past tenses (être verb!)

Like venir, it takes être.

Devenir takes être

« Je suis devenu » — I became. Like its parent venir, this verb takes être, and the participle agrees: « elle est devenue », « ils sont devenus ».

The participle devenu ends in -u, following the venir family. The imperfect is regular from the nous stem: je devenais.

1. Être, with agreement. « Elle est devenue. »

2. Participle devenu. Same as venu, revenu.

3. Imperfect je devenais for gradual change.

Je suis devenu professeur.I became a teacher.

Elle est devenue célèbre.She became famous.

Ils sont devenus amis.They became friends.

Ça devenait difficile.It was becoming difficult.
