The future stem is not what you would guess.

Je deviendrai

The future and conditional are built on an irregular stem: deviendr-. So je deviendrai (I will become) and je deviendrais (I would become). You cannot derive this from the infinitive, and it must be memorised.

The same stem serves venir (je viendrai), revenir and tenir (je tiendrai). One irregular stem, four common verbs — good value for the effort.

1. Stem is deviendr-. Not « devenir- ».

2. Same shape as viendrai, tiendrai.

3. Conditional for speculation. « Ça deviendrait compliqué. »

Ça deviendrait compliqué.That would get complicated.

Tu deviendras meilleur.You’ll get better.

Nous deviendrons plus efficaces.We will become more efficient.
