Nuancing the contrast
« cependant / pourtant » (however/yet): « c’est cher, pourtant je l’achète ». « alors que » (whereas): « il sort alors qu’il pleut ».
Cause & addition, written style
« car » (for/because — written), « ainsi » (thus), « de plus » (moreover), « en effet » (indeed — confirms what you just said).
💡 « pourtant » = le « mais » qui insiste : c’est cher, POURTANT j’achète.
