« apprendre » in the subjunctive — wish, doubt, necessity, emotion.
At B2, « apprendre » takes the subjunctive — and here is the reframe that makes it click: the subjunctive is not a tense, it’s a mood. French uses it whenever the action lives in someone’s head rather than in reality: wishes (« je veux que »), necessity (« il faut que »), doubt (« je ne pense pas que »), emotion (« je suis content que »).
So don’t ask when — ask after what. The triggers are a short, learnable list, and the formation below starts from a form you already know. Weld trigger + verb together (« il faut que je… ») and practise them as single chunks: that’s how natives store them too.

Recipe: take ils apprennent, drop -ent → stem apprenn-. The subjunctive of most verbs starts from the ils-form.

⚠️ Classic mistake: no subjunctive after j’espère que or affirmative je pense que — those take the indicative. The doubt/wish/necessity is what triggers it.
