Small article shifts that mark educated French — starting with « de » before plural adjectives.
des → de before an adjective
Careful French turns « des » into « de » when a plural adjective precedes the noun: « de belles maisons », « de grands progrès ». Keep « des » when the adjective follows: « des maisons magnifiques ».
Abstractions & style
Abstract qualities take the definite in general statements — « La patience est une vertu » — where English drops the article. Reversing this is the classic anglophone tell.
