Negation as a stylistic tool: understatement, contrast, and « ne serait-ce que ».
« Ce n’est pas faux » (= you’re quite right), « ce n’est pas bête » (= that’s clever). Negating the opposite is how French does elegant understatement.
« Non pas… mais » (not X, but Y) structures an argument; « ne serait-ce que » (if only, even just) adds precision: « appelle-moi, ne serait-ce que cinq minutes ».
