Poser des questions at C1 — rhétorique & nuances
On this page
Questions that aren’t questions: rhetoric, tags, and the interro-négative.
The interro-négative
« Ne pensez-vous pas que… ? » doesn’t ask — it argues. And remember: to answer it positively, French says « si », not « oui ».
Question tags à la française
« …, n’est-ce pas ? » (formal), « …, non ? » (neutral), « …, hein ? » (casual). Each one softens or seeks agreement differently — pick by register.
💡 Répondre oui à une question négative = « SI », pas « oui ».

💡 Your C1 goal
At C1 you’re refining style: choosing between correct options for tone and precision. Notice how native writers and speakers deploy this, and imitate deliberately.
