Looking closely, and not looking at all
Y regarder de près means to look closely, to examine carefully: « à y regarder de près, le contrat est mauvais ». The y is obligatory and the phrase is fixed.
Its opposite, ne pas y regarder, means not to be fussy: « il n’y regarde pas de si près » — he isn’t that particular. And regarder droit dans les yeux carries the same weight as in English.

1. « À y regarder de près » opens a reassessment. Very common in writing.
2. « Il n’y regarde pas de trop près » = he lets things slide.
3. Keep the « y ». Dropping it breaks the idiom.
À y regarder de près, c’est faux.On close inspection, it’s wrong.
Il n’y regarde pas de si près.He isn’t all that particular.
Elle l’a regardé droit dans les yeux.She looked him straight in the eye.
Regarde-y à deux fois.Think twice about it.
