The little « ne » after comparatives, and the comparison of the essayists.
After « plus/moins … que » with a clause, formal French slips in a non-negative « ne »: « Il est plus tard que tu ne crois. » It negates nothing — pure elegance.
« Autant il était calme, autant son frère était nerveux » (contrast). « Tant il est vrai que… » (so true is it that…). « des plus » + adjective: « une œuvre des plus singulières ».
💡 « plus … que tu NE crois » — ce « ne » ne nie rien : c’est du style.
