    Wishes, reservations and destined futures.

    Formal calls

« Appeler de ses vœux » is the phrase of speeches and editorials: « les syndicats appellent de leurs vœux une réforme du financement » — they are calling for it, formally and publicly. Keep the possessive agreeing with the subject: « j’appelle de mes vœux », « il appelle de ses vœux ». Spoken French would simply say « demander ».

With a thing as subject, « appeler » means to warrant: « cette décision appelle plusieurs remarques », « le texte appelle des réserves ». It is the polite way to announce criticism before you deliver it. « Être appelé à » plus an infinitive marks destiny: « ce dispositif est appelé à disparaître ». And official letters open with « j’appelle votre attention sur ».

💡 Focus at this level: Formal — appeler de ses vœux, appeler des réserves, être appelé à
