s’en aller at C2 — literary & formal

On this page
    « s’en aller » — jump to your level:A1A2B1B2C1C2Native

Pronoun order, literary narrative, formal notices.

    The written register

The compound past is the hurdle. « En » stays welded to the verb: it is « je m’en suis allé », never « je me suis en allé ». The participle agrees with the subject: « les délégations s’en sont allées ».

The highest register drops it altogether and prefers « se retirer » or « prendre congé », which sound composed where « s’en aller » sounds merely factual.

💡 Focus at this level: Formal — je m’en suis allé, s’en aller + infinitif, veuillez ne pas vous en aller

👨‍🏫 How to use « s’en aller » at this level

    3. « Veuillez ne pas vous en aller » = the formal negative imperative; « vous en » stays welded after « ne ».
