Le subjonctif in real spoken French
On this page
Which subjunctives natives actually use — and the shortcuts they take.
« Faut que » rules the street
Spoken French drops « il »: « Faut que j’y aille », « faut qu’on se voie » (we must meet up). These are among the most frequent sentences in the language — shadow them until they’re automatic.
What natives skip
Rare triggers get simplified: instead of « avant qu’il parte », you’ll often hear « avant de partir » or just two sentences. But « faut que », « je veux que », « j’aimerais que » — those are everywhere, every day.
💡 « Faut que j’y aille ! » — le « il » disparaît dans la rue.
