The « ne » that negates nothing, and the elegant « ne » that stands alone.
After « avant que », « à moins que », « craindre que » and comparisons, French slips in a « ne » that is not a negation: « je crains qu’il ne soit trop tard » = I fear it IS too late. Don’t translate it; don’t add « pas ».
With « cesser, oser, pouvoir, savoir », formal French may drop « pas » : « je ne saurais vous dire » — refined, examiner-pleasing.
💡 Le ne explétif ne nie rien — n’ajoutez jamais « pas ».
